Frequently asked questions

Is my result really free?

Yes. Your full life-expectancy estimate and your death date are revealed before any paywall, with nothing blurred or held back. The optional Pro purchase unlocks the what-if levers ("+X years if you…") and the full citation view, and it removes the advertising from the free version.

How is my life expectancy calculated?

Yorick starts from a baseline of official mortality statistics: U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) period life tables for age- and sex-specific mortality, adjusted with United Nations life-expectancy data covering 234 countries and territories so your starting point matches your country.

Your ~20 lifestyle answers then adjust this baseline using effect sizes from named, peer-reviewed research, including Doll & Peto 2004 (BMJ, smoking), Li et al. 2018 (Circulation, combined lifestyle factors), Fadnes et al. 2022 (PLOS Medicine, diet), and the VITAL 2019 trial (NEJM). Each adjustment in the app shows its citation.

The result is a statistical estimate, an average for people with your profile, not a prediction of your individual fate.

What happens to my answers and data?

Your answers never leave your iPhone. Yorick has no account and no server of ours, and your answers, your estimate, and your date are computed and stored on-device. The free version shows advertising from Google, which loads only after you have given your consent and which never receives your answers. See the full Privacy Policy.

Does the free version show ads, and how do I turn them off?

Yes. A banner sits at the bottom of the result screen, and one full screen advert can appear after you close the sources and methodology sheet on that screen. The full screen advert is held back until your second session and appears at most once every three minutes. The adverts are delivered by Google's Mobile Ads SDK.

They load only after Google's consent form and the App Tracking Transparency prompt from iOS. You can change your answer at any time in the app under Settings, entry Ad privacy options, which appears wherever Google's consent form provides privacy options for your region. The one-time purchase Yorick Pro removes the advertising entirely.

What does this website measure?

This site uses Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless: it sets no identifier, stores nothing on your device, and builds no profile. It counts page views and clicks on the App Store button, together with the position of that button on the page and the path of the page.

The provider is Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Avenue #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA, whose privacy policy is at vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy. Nothing is evaluated per person and nothing is passed on to third parties. This applies to the website only, not to the app.

Is this medical advice?

No. Yorick provides statistical estimates for educational and motivational purposes only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Consult a healthcare professional before making health decisions.

Can I retake the quiz?

Yes, as often as you like. Retaking the quiz recalculates your estimate from your new answers, which is useful for seeing how a real lifestyle change moves your date. There is no limit and no extra charge.

How do I restore my Pro purchase?

Open Yorick, go to the Pro screen, and tap "Restore Purchases". Make sure you are signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to buy Pro. Apple processes the restore, and no account with us is needed.

I got a new iPhone. Will Pro carry over?

Yes. Yorick Pro is a one-time purchase tied to your Apple ID, not your device. Install Yorick on the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple ID, and tap "Restore Purchases" on the Pro screen. Note that your quiz answers stay on the old device (they are never uploaded), so simply retake the quiz, which takes about two minutes.
